Grey hair

Found TWO more last night.

That makes SEVEN in total.

And that's only counting the ones I can see.

They aren't just a greyish shade either, they're white/silver/grey ... the worst kind. Why the hell can't I even have a greying-in period.

Goddamn it, I'm not even 40 yet.

Kill me.

  1. Think of them as natural highlights! :-P

I've been finding grey hairs since my mid-twenties, one of my friends went almost completely grey by the time she was 25 (and she's not even an academic!), some of us just got unlucky...

And if you have a really scary event coming up, I've found that paying a good colourist to blend in the grey is well worth the money (though I don'd usually both)

  2. I figure you cut out the seven grey strands and stick them up the noses of those two crappy techs from your previous post.

Or, if they don't do your work this week then ask them to pluck out the strands with their teeth, explaining that this is how it feels to get anything of use out of them. Maybe I'm feeling bitchy this week too?

  3. Please. I'm not even 30 and I have at least 25 silver hairs. One of these days, I've got to stop plucking them, or else I won't have any hair left.

  4. I'm pretty sure that trying to teach high school physics gave me more grey hairs than being an academic has to date. Chalk it up to stress, call it looking distinguished, and move on. :)

  5. JaneB: I don't color my hair so suddenly showing up with highlights would be a dead giveaway.

Scientia matris: Ummm ... interesting suggestion. Thanks?

Candid engineer: I have also been plucking the hairs out but if I keep going, my temples will look like they are receding.

Academic: I don't want to look distinguished as I would rather continue to look like the young-ish, kick ass, extreme sport loving, super cool person I am right now.

If I have 7 silver hairs that I can see, there's every chance that I could have a skunk-like streak down the back of my head that none of my "friends" thought to tell me about aaaaaaaarrrrrggggghhh.

  6. Oh shut up - I got my first one at 18 and they have multiplied ever since. (I am now 31). Not only that but while I have very curly hair, the white ones DON'T CURL and all stick out sideways. I'm gonna look like friggin' Einstein in a few years.

  7. Cath, I have straight hair and my greys are coming in sort of geometrically kinky (not smooth curves, awkward kinks). Sigh.

I don't usually dye my hair - I got the colourist to match my natural base colour and she just basically put highlights of the two closest shades to my natural colour around my face and down my parting, so that it faded the grey out beautifully. She found it very funny that I was paying to get what was effectively invisible work done but I liked the result! I don't care so much now - 40 this year and the grey is spreading...

  8. I think I've had at least seven very white hairs since high school. They stand out very nicely in dark brown hair. I haven't counted, but I'm sure I have more than seven at 23 years old.

I don't want to sound mean, but I don't understand why people care about grey/white hair. Anyone want to clarify for me?

Arghhh! How did you know I'd found a white hair sprouting out of my nose? It's all downhill from 30...
